The concept of the project comes from the natural inspiration of the sun, imprinting the curves of the solar path on the horizontal plane. In order to make this concept real, the curves come from the projection of the plot’s surface (10x10m) according to the yearly path of the sun on the horizontal plane; At the end, 12 curves, one per each month, were obtained and as a consequence, the final layout of the pavilion was driven from these curves..

Concept

Thanks to Grasshopper simulation of the sun path, the curves of the 10x10 metres plan are projected and imprinted in the pavement. The extraction of these is the starting point and the leitmotiv of the whole design process.
The solar curves are taken in order to create the volume and the layout, they gives the movement of the structure.
The curves are extruded and mirrored to create the covering and the pavement attaching together. They are going to create the staircase, the extrusion gives the possibility to have different seats.
The ultimate design of the pavilion is formed by the smoothing of the upper curves in a really soft and delicate covering, where holes livens up the shape and let the natural solar light coming in, illuminating naturally the space behind.

Design

the exhibition pavilion was designed during a workshop with the Turin Polytechnic University and the University of Salford. The concept was designed and a model was created using laser cutting technology. Finally an augmented model was created.
